Up until recently, the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. However, silence is no anymore an option.

What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The term "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.
In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed down to the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology, and aids scientists to understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also reveals the relationships between different species. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world and to discover useful information like the development of new drugs.
The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on Earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in conflict with religious beliefs as it only addresses physical objects, events, and processes.
In reality, many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. Some Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is essential that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. In some countries around the globe there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.
The vast majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief vary. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve animal and plants species, mostly to benefit humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a a strong religious belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. While some creationists are not Christian, they are a majority. Creationists are typically divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most common kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and the life on Earth started only recently.
OECs are not as well-known however they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require miracles. The founders of modern science shunned miracles because they feared they would lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this view, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. Then the evolutionary changes create new species that are similar to the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This position is supported by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States. 에볼루션 룰렛 of undergraduates studying biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
